Radon and Lung Cancer – What is the Relationship

How does lung cancer occur? Radon and lung cancer mostly coexist. Studies have proved that continued exposure to radon gas is causing lung cancer. Those working in mines, underground, uranium processing units and phosphate fertiliser factories which all release uranium and radon, are found more prone to contract  lung cancer. Radon, on breaking into radon progeny as tiny radioactive elements on radiation, settles itself in the lining of the lungs. This radiation damages the lung cells leading to lung cancer. This is the second major cause for most deaths due to lung cancer, next to cigarette smoking in the US. Studies further indicate that radon causes greater risk of lung cancer in the case of smokers and ex-smokers. What is radon?
